Odds and Ends

Friday
September 22, 2006

My bro Matt is going to be at my apartment in roughly a half hour, so I'm going to write this as quickly as possible. In my mind I hear Dick Clark shouting "Hurry!" like he used to do to contestants in the bonus round on $25,000 Pyramid when time was running short but they had almost won.

Tomorrow is the UAB/Mississippi State game. Matt told me on the phone during my drive down I-65 that the spread is UAB -10. Yep, UAB is a double-digit favorite over MSU for tomorrow's game. It's one thing when Miss. State can't beat hardcore SEC teams, but losing at home to Tulane last week was inexcusable.

Some random things have been on my mind from time to time, and now there's finally a column for me to work them all in (unless I happen to forget one.) The transitions will be herky-jerky at best, so hang on.

There's propaganda, there's government propaganda, and then there's hand dryer propaganda. During my many trips up to Ca$hville as of late, I've found myself stopping off at various places to use the restroom. When you're drinking 40+ ounces of water a day, that happens to you, even if you have super kidneys like I do. In some restrooms there are paper towel dispensers, in others there are air dryers, and in a select few there are both.

For my money, I'll take paper towels any day. What if I spilled something on my shirt? Or what if I'm sweating and need to dry off my forehead? A blow dryer is ineffective for those needs. But what really gets me is that on many blow dryers, there's actual propoganda supporting the use of blow dryers vs. paper towels, with claims of how they are better for the environment (it's lacking any statistical verification, of course.) The worst is that I hate the way my hands feel after using a blow dryer vs. paper towels, and I have to sit there and see that tripe time and time again... Obviously my problems are relatively small if I have that to gripe about, but it's an annoyance that I've never heard voiced before that at least needed to be stated on here.

There is a strange radio interference zone in the mile or so radius surrounding the I-65/State Route 840 interchange south of Nashville. It's a bizarre thing. It affects not only my Sirius Starmate's unit-to-car mini-broadcaster, but even full-powered FM stations like 96.3 Jack FM. I'm at a loss to explain it.

Perhaps it's the early schedule, or perhaps it's because, as Matt puts it, I'm getting old, but anymore I run out of energy pretty quick when it starts to get late at night. In the event of going "all in" for a late night, it usually wipes me out like crazy for the next day, making it pretty much incompatible with work.

Today I went to lunch with Chad and Dustin at Famous Dave's. Decent place, though Dustin had fun ribbing me about not liking pickles and I gave him the business about his disdain for mustard.

My bro has arrived... gotta run.
