Lou Pickney's Online Commentary

Five Years Later

Monday
September 11, 2006

It was five years ago today that the most horrible day in the history of my generation took place: 9-11-2001. For those who lived through it who were old enough to remember, the day contained a series of events that have forever changed the lives of all Americans.

Last night I watched approximately 40 minutes of video of the ABC News broadcast from the morning of 9/11/01, since it was on ABC that I saw the second plane hit the tower. Seeing it again, five years later, was a sad reminder of what happened on that terrible morning.

Did you know that many news outlets have an outright ban on showing the planes hitting the World Trade Center buildings? This isn't conspiracy theory material; there are actual policies in place (some that I personally ran into) saying that the video cannot be shown on TV due to the painful emotions that they evoke. It makes me mad that such policies are in place, but they exist nevertheless.

In the days and weeks following the attack, the phrase "Never Forget" was commonly heard. And I, for one, hope that no one forgets what happened...
