Lou Pickney's Online Commentary

Stubborn Internet

As if things couldn't get more frustrating with my website, apparently the listing for it through ipowerweb has reverted back to its old listing (which hosted it on an entirely different server.) It's been frustrating trying to make it work. This has been going on for almost a month now... and it's driving me crazy. If this makes no sense to you, well just understand that ignorance is bliss sometimes. I'm a writer, not a computer engineer. But in this genre, sometimes you have to act as both.

I flipped to CBS this afternoon and wondered why Quentin Tarantino and Ryan Seacrest were playing a celebrity tennis game on national TV. Then I realized that it was actually Roger Federer vs. Andy Roddick in the U.S. Open Finals.

Quentin Tarantino and Roger Federer
I'm not the first person to notice the resemblence.

NFL season has begun, and it has been good times between that and the slew of college games. Texas/Ohio State last night had a "big deal" feel to it, and it was made even better with that fact that Road Warrior Animal's son (James Laurinaitis) had a great game at LB for Ohio State. He should be required to wear Legion of Doom face paint during games, though.

The Jaguars/Cowboys game is the late game on here; give Jacksonville credit for making Dallas wear their seldom-seen blue jerseys (which are supposedly bad luck for them.) Some humorous moments: Maurice Williams joining the Dave Brown hall of fame of guys who have their full first and last names on their jersey; Dallas' kicker Shaun Suisham hitting the upright during a chip shot field goal attempt; Suisham looking like he's 12 years old in his profile pic, in the spirit of Nate Kaeding; Joe Buck trying to jinx Fred Taylor by mentioning that he's only made it through 16 games healthy twice in his career.

Just now Bill Parcells tried to challenge a call by throwing his red flag on the field, but it was too late according to the refs. Between that and Nick Saban's missed flag throw on Thursday night, I'd suggest to coaches that they throw the flags *at* the refs, much like refs throw their yellow flags at offending players. Hit the back judge in the junk with one (which has a bean bag attached) and I'd suggest that you'll get the attention of the officiating crew.

One last thing: that new Nike commercial with "Spirit in the Sky" and the high school game is one of the most impressive ads I've seen in some time. Though it doesn't say much for Don Shula's coaching abilities if he can barely lead that team of stars to a win over a scrub opponent. Seriously, look at the size difference between Briscoe and the generic opponents:

Nike Spirit in the Sky ad
Brian Urlacher says, "We can take 'em." Oh, you think so, doctor?

The concept that Briscoe is losing at the end is laughable.

Nike Spirit in the Sky ad
Coach Don Shula is far removed from the unbeaten 1974 Dolphins.

Here's the YouTube video of the 1:30 version of the ad. The :30 version that aired in Birmingham removed the classroom scenes and (notably) the interracial flirting angle, though I think it came from the national FOX feed.
