"And it's you I see, but you don't see me
And it's you I hear, so loud and clear"
-Coldplay "Shiver"
"And you're gone now
And you've left me all alone
And did it make you happier?"
-Guster "Happier"
There was a big headline on the Drudge Report today that read "Not Again"... talking about Tropical Storm Rita. Apparently they skip the letter Q when it comes to naming tropical storms and hurricanes. Whatever the case, it looks like the latest hurricane will cut through the keys and hit Texas. And the season doesn't even end until December 1. Tampa isn't in the range of probability for being hit, so it looks like we've dodged another one here.
I stayed up to watch tonight's improbable Washington win over Dallas on Monday Night Football (Bill Parcells' first-ever loss after leading by 13 or more in the 4th quarter), and now I can't sleep. That's just great. Work and work and work, and you'd think exhaustion or at least sleepiness would hit, but no.
It probably doesn't help that I'm in a bizarre mood: part sardonic, part disappointed, part restless. It's an uncomfortable trio of emotions, and with my mind racing at a million miles a minute, it can be tough to pinpoint the whats and the whys of everything. It's like I need a regulator on my subconscious to sort through the various thoughts and memories. Too many ghosts in the machine right now, and the sleep I need to sort it all out is eluding me.
I DVRed the marathon of Dancing With The Stars that ABC Family ran yesterday, and I've seen three of the six episodes so far. When Howard Stern talked about the show, I took a passing interest, but I never bothered to actually tune in. It turns out that the show was entertaining in ways I didn't expect. I didn't realize that Tom Bergeron was a host on there; I remember when CBS was considering him to host The Early Show, but instead the network went with the four-anchor approach that looks like a bad copy of a photocopy of NBC's Today show.
But my point with bringing this up is that the show was actually, surprisingly, very entertaining. Seeing C-List celebs try to dance didn't sound remotely interesting to me as a premise, but there were enough fun things about it to make the show interesting. The little things, like the way the crowd booed the judges whenever they said anything negative, were outstanding. And seeing Kelly Monaco in those outfits was nice. Yeah, she was naked in Playboy, but still she came across great from a sensuality standpoint (her dancing wasn't anything special, but if you think I care about that, you obviously need to read more on here).

One interesting thing I heard from Kelly Monaco's interview on Howard Stern earlier this month is why they had a "no touching" clause with her for appearances. I remember when she had the now-famous (to me) autograph signing at a random convenience store in Panama City on Spring Break 1997 how they had a big sign up that said you could have your picture taken with her, but NO TOUCHING. Why? It turns out she was afraid of someone "rubbing liquid ecstasy or acid" into her skin. An outlandish fear? Perhaps. But now the sign makes sense, 8½ years later. And let me assure you that writing that last sentence made me cringe. Damn, I'm getting old. Meanwhile, time flies by me like a subway train zooming past a platform. Zip, there it goes, look back and take a glimpse at what's quickly flying by.
One more thing: it was funny to hear the British guy said "Carrie Ann Inaba" after having heard Stern do an impression of the voice for so long. I had thought he was saying "Carrie Ann in Arbor" until I saw the show. Inaba, incidentally, was once a Fly Girl on In Living Color, which I guess makes her the second-most famous fly girl next to Jennifer Lopez. Thank you, IMDB.com! She was also in Austin Powers: Goldmember, as shown in the photo above.
Time to take another shot at sleep now...
