"The Red Sox are a team in shambles, and as long as they resort to violence to solve their problems they will be a joke!"
-Josh Tenisci, on ReasonToThink.com, 7/26/2004

The NFL season starts tonight, with the Colts taking on the Patriots in prime time in front of a national audience. The big deal being made about the costumes of the "entertainment" for the game amuses me. My thought is, why in the world does the NFL think it needs B-list singers and the like to bring in viewers? Dammit, the game itself is the entertainment. Peyton Manning attempting to extract revenge against the defending World Champion Patriots (who mauled his receivers, with zero penalties called, in last year's playoffs). The real trouble though will be the Colts corners trying to keep the Pats passing game in check. I keep writing this every year, and it still burns me that the Colts passed on CB Fred Smoot in the second round of the 2002 Draft. I may never get over that one.

More than a million people per year apply to try out for Wheel of Fortune, but less than 600 people make it. But after yesterday's column, I gained a renewed interest in trying to get on the show. That didn't last long, though.

In reading some of the fine print, it turns out that I'm not eligible to be on Wheel of Fortune until April 2008 at the earliest (since my contract at WTSP ran through April 2003, technically making me an employee there through that time). Here's why (from the official website):

You are not eligible to play on Wheel of Fortune if you, your relatives, or any person(s) you know, are or, within the last five years, were employed by any of the following: Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc., Sony Pictures Television Inc., The Griffin Group, King World Productions, Inc., Sullivan Compliance Company, or any other TV station (including advertisers and related radio stations) broadcasting Wheel of Fortune or JEOPARDY!.

So, if though some strike of fate you end up being selected to be on Wheel of Fortune, say you never met me. Though, now that I think about it, I still know people at both WTSP and WSAZ. Oh well, so it goes.

The Apprentice makes its season debut tonight. That should be fun. It'll be an excellent night for TV between that, the Colts/Pats game, Karen (hopefully) getting voted out on Big Brother, and Ken Jennings' winning streak on Jeopardy!. The Hurricane Ivan path keeps bouncing around, but the latest path has it heading back toward the Tampa Bay area (earlier it had been pointing toward Miami, and then it looked lined up for Port Charlotte). It should be down to a Category 4 level by the time it makes landfall, but by then it'll still be severe enough to cause massive damage. I hope it stays away from here, but the sad reality is that Jamaica is going to be blasted, as is Cuba, and then some part of the U.S. is going to take a direct shot. Where exactly that is remains to be seen...
