Storm Surge

Wednesday
September 1, 2004

I have to hand it to my friend Dennis Goodman, he was right about The Amazing Race being a great show. I'm solidly hooked on it now. That's despite so many of the teams coming across as being entirely unlikeable. The model team (Brandon & Nicole) aren't so bad until they start with the bible-beater montre, at which point I find myself involuntarily cheering against them. I was hoping that they would shave their heads last night as part of the fast-forward, but they punked out (too bad, that would've been high comedy). And it turned out that it was one of those stupid non-elimination legs, so they stayed in it (ugh). Then there's Colin, who has this Chris Benoit intensity mixed with the stereotypical "alpha male asshole guy" unlikable side. I'm waiting for him to up and backhand his partner in next week's episode. The Bowling Moms are annoying (for the love of god SHUT UP), and the twins think they're hotter than they really are. Chip & Kim are the only likeable team left, and I hope they win it all.

Meanwhile, Big Brother 5 is playing out in a strange manner. Karen was an idiot to not throw the veto competition this week; had she promised to help Adria but then intentionally not won, she could've still potentially had Adria and Natalie's votes at the end. Instead she won, didn't use the veto, and now made herself look like a punk to them (though I hope that the twins saw through her insincerity as much as I did). Drew and Nakomis may, in separate ways, be playing the best games so far, though it all changes week-to-week with who is Head of Household.

Hurricane Frances is moving closer to Florida, and every time they re-do the "model" for where it'll hit, the projected landing point moves lower. The storm could still do a number of things (go well south, cut up and miss Florida altogether, etc.), but right now it's looking like Melbourne is the most likely hit point, which will bring the storm frighteningly close to Tampa. Having two Category 4 hurricanes hit within such a short timespan of one another would be unprecidented in recorded history, but that's what we might be facing here shortly.

My friend Stacey called me last night, en route with her move to Atlanta. It's sucked not having her around here at work anymore. Believe me, after nearly six years in TV you get used to having co-workers come and go, but in this particular setting it was nice having her as a stabilizing force. But so it goes. As it is, once we get the new deal set with Bubba I'll be working out of a different place, but nontheless it sucks having her gone.

They need to rename Madden 2005 to just Mad, because that's what I tend to get when I play that game. The game is great, but when you give up a long score (particularly a long TD pass when you have a Dime Cover 3 defense called) it can be VERY frustrating...
