Firefox Style

Thursday
October 26, 2006

If you haven't already, you absolutely owe it to yourself to download the new Firefox 2.0 from Mozilla. It's free, and it's worlds better than Internet Explorer. Do it, and while you're at it, include the AccuWeather add-on and the Noia Extreme 2.0 skin.

I have to credit my bro Matt on the Noia thing, but it adds a nice look to Firefox. Plus, the "X" that it includes in the button bar on this version makes me laugh. Check it out: It's exaggerated-looking, and at first I hated it, but then my hate turned to love. I'm fickle like that, I suppose.

The best new feature? Spell checking in real-time. It's great, I tell you. It helps for people like me who might have a wide vocabulary but might not have the spelling depth to match it.

There were some fun moments today at lunch. Dustin and I went to Quizno's directly from work. I must say that The Quiz has some really good sandwiches. The Chicken Carbonara is great, though I go against the grain and order mine without mushrooms. Unfortunately for Dustin, the restaurant has apparently discontinued the corn chowder, which made him quite unhappy. I didn't give him the business about it too bad, though it was amusing to see him vexed.

The highlight was this cute blonde chick with a five-star ass who went through the line while we were there. Dustin and I were mesmerized. She had the tight pants to accentuate things... and let me tell you, I went to some ridiculous lengths to sneak a peak. That included intentionally dropping a napkin, acting like it was an accident, and taking as long as possible to pick it up. I even brought up the corn chowder again as an excuse to look toward the menu... while actually checking out the goods. Damn, I'm smooth.

Tonight I was all set to go over to my parents' house for the traditional Thursday night dinner, but my Dad and Matt are at a business dinner, so instead I'm going to meet up with the crew tomorrow night. It happens that Father Ryan has its Homecoming, so I think I'll end up going to the game. Should be a good time.

Here are some thoughts from tonight's sports, as I type on my brother's laptop computer. I mention the laptop because it's tougher for me to type on this damn thing, between the smaller keyboard and pseudo-mouse with a mind of its own, but at least I can watch the game(s) while I write.

-Virginia Tech blowing up on Clemson was nice to see. Clemson DE Gaines Adams is a badass who will be great in the NFL, but I felt that Clemson got a BS win over Wake Forest earlier this year. Plus, I don't want Tommy Bowden to get too much of an ego. I like the idea of a balanced, but not dominant, ACC.

-Just when you thought that the Big East was ACC circa 2002 redux, you blink and there are three unbeaten Big East teams: WVU, Louisville, and Rutgers. I'll bitch until my dying day that Division I-A football needs a playoff system, like any other sport. Until then, we have all sorts of nonsense fodder for shallow sports commentators to discuss ad nauseum, like which team is best between the Michigan/Ohio State loser, USC, the Big East survivor, and whomever wins the SEC. This could be settled on the field. That fact should be brought up EVERY TIME the whole BCS insanity is discussed.

-Someday, not too terribly far from now, those awful thin lines that look like a computer circuit board that Nike insists on putting on jerseys (such as for tonight's Thursday night opponents, Clemson and V-Tech) will look horribly dated.

-St. Louis tied up the game at 3-all in the bottom of the 7th as I typed that last paragraph. I wasn't 100% sure when the World Series began where my alliance would fall, but I'm strongly behind the Cardinals now. Meanwhile, last night's rainout caused a huge shortage in cigarettes in the eastern Missouri area thanks to Jim Leyland chain smoking all night. An actual quote from the Tigers manager: "I smoked about a carton, probably the worst day of the year for my lungs." Think about that when you see Leyland wearing a uniform, as if he might be called on to play left field in a pinch in an extra-inning game.

-A hilarious moment from tonight's game: FOX color commentator Tim McCarver remarked that a Jeff Suppan pitch "caught the corner", only for the FOX tracker to show on replay that the pitch actually was a good 4 inches outside. This was followed by awkward, dead silence. There's a reason why the Sports Guy makes fun of McCarver all the time. Gotta love live TV.

-On the downside, the local FOX affiliate (Sinclair-owned WZTV) pissed me off royally by putting up one of those on-screen promos in the middle of the action for their broadcasts of The Bernie Mac Show at 11:30 PM. This is something that TNT ran into the ground during the most recent NBA playoffs. My major beef was that they left it up there for a solid minute. If it was a mistake, they managed to fix it right before they went to commercial break. I now have yet another reason to loathe Sinclair Broadcasting.

Somehow I managed to backspace on this computer just now, and I feared that I had lost irrecoverable paragraphs of brilliance. Somehow, I managed to hit the next button... and the text was still there. That almost NEVER works. If you've ever had a document not save on a computer (or an e-mail you spent 45 minutes on nearly disappear), you probably know what I mean. Guess that means I need to save after every paragraph... just in case.

Matt just showed us his Brian Urlacher costume that he's wearing out in New Orleans this weekend. He should be in for a really fun time there. I miss the Big Easy.
