Brook's Dilemma

Sunday
October 27, 2002

This Guavaween 2002 weekend was incredible, one of the most outstanding experiences of my life as far as a series of fun and unpredictable and exciting events. It's one of those things that really deserves a day or two to contemplate before I write about it on here. Just trust me -- very very good times. My friend Richard Karg missed out not being able to make it down here.

I'll have pictures on here when I get them. I went as a pimp, but I had a Howard Stern wig so I ended up getting recognized as Stern more than as a pimp. Go figure.

My friend Brook Gardiner will watch today's Cowboys/Seahawks game with mixed emotions. As a Cowboys fan and a fan of Emmitt, he's excited for Emmitt moving within 100 yards of the late Walter Payton's NFL career rushing record. But next week Brook will fly from NYC to Detroit to go to the Cowboys/Lions game with his brother Jon Gardiner (who's also a friend of mine). So Brook has the chance to see Emmitt break the record IN PERSON. That's one of those watershed events that are very rare in sports. He could frame the ticket, the newspaper headline and a few pictures of the game and have a permanent keepsake. Twenty years from now, entertaining company at his home, he could say matter-of-factly: "Yes, I was there the day Emmitt broke the record." How cool is that?

Of course, that hinges on Emmitt not breaking the record today. Emmitt needs more than 90 yards, but you know the Cowboys will feed him the ball like mad to try to help him break the record at home (Dallas hits the road for the next two games). Brook hedged his bets further by starting Emmitt in our Fantasy Football League, so if Emmitt breaks the record this week he'll have some payoff on that end as well.

I'm exhausted from tonight, so time to get some sleep. What a great weekend. I love Tampa.
