"You've got a chance to put things right
So how's it going to be?"
-Gomez "See The World"
This past Memorial Day weekend I returned to Huntington, WV to visit my friend Velvet. And, just like New Year's weekend when I went there, I had a blast.
Velvet is one of just a few people who I can hang out with over long periods of time without getting annoyed. While I may come across as a nice person, it's only because I handle the rage from within via self-control (and meds.) Sometimes the dark side slips out, particularly in moments of pressure. I'm not Bruce Banner, but from time to time the Incredible Hulk from within breaks through. So it goes.
But with Velvet, she's so damn cool that there's nothing for me to get enraged about. Her being such an intelligent person helps; while we share some interests, she knows about all sorts of things that I'm not nearly as well versed in, from science to literature. The only thing that pissed me off over the weekend was my inability to effective cut empty soda bottles (lousy left-handed scissors) for Velvet to use to protect her plants outside, but I think she sensed that as she took over cutting the bottles about midway through the effort. It's not like the telepathy that my brother Matt and I have forged, but the bottom line is that Velvet is a fun person to spend time with.
As is usually the case, Velvet's dogs provided a great deal of entertainment for us. Her pit bull Ernie really took a liking to me, but seeing the personalities of all four of her dogs play out as they interacted was very entertaining.
Two movies that I saw at Velvet's place were Snatch and The Boondock Saints. Her "I can't believe you've never seen that" reaction to both of them was amusing, if for no other reason because I've seen that reaction time and time again from various people throughout the past several years. Who am I, Roger Ebert? But both were excellent films, and in particular Snatch was outstanding. It's highly recommended.
Tonight I had dinner with Rich Karg over at Jim 'N Nick's BBQ in Smyrna. He and I talked business; I'm hoping to help his band The Karg Boys (a duo of Rich and his brother Andy) get some gigs within driving distance of here. They have great talent and a strong work ethic, but not much experience with the whole process of finding clubs to contact or radio stations to send their music. That's where I come into play. Hopefully I can help them out.
So far, so good with things here in Smyrna. I've been back in the Nashville area for a little more than a month now, and it's been great so far. I wasn't sure how it would work living here; I figured it would be fun, but you never know for sure about these things until you get into it. But it has been a blast, with constant moments of hilarity (e.g. Dustin's phobia of mustard, us busting Matt's chops about the amazing talent of Cleveland Cavs center Žydrūnas Ilgauskas, the humor of various inside jokes, etc.) in a great setting. Good times.
One thing that Dustin and Matt haven't been able to give me any ribbing about is the success of the San Antonio Spurs, who are in the NBA Finals. As a Spurs fan, that naturally has me feeling happy. Nevermind the haters; San Antonio's front office has crafted its team the right way, building via the draft and crafting a team with solid cohesion and strong teamwork. We'll see if they can win their fourth title in eight years. I hope it happens.
