On The Mend

Thursday
May 10, 2007

I'm on the comeback trail from being sick, using the power of Zithromax (an old friend of mine, as longtime readers might recall) to fight an infection that left me coughing, hacking, and generally feeling terrible for the past three days. After taking off Monday (travel day) and Tuesday (dentist appointment), I had to miss work yesterday and today due to being sick. I really wanted to get in there today in particular, but I would've been pretty much worthless because of how I felt.

An interesting development in the fight against crystal meth is that medicines containing pseudoephedrine, once available for purchase like any other remedy, are now kept behind the counter at drug stores in most all states. You can get the old-style medicine without a prescription, but they keep track of who is buying what to avoid people buying it en masse to create meth. I understand the reasoning behind it, but it was a pain in the ass at Eckerd today to not be able to buy both Sudafed and DayQuil under the one box per person limit (I had to choose, and I picked Sudafed.)

While I had barely enough energy to get up, I was able to view some TV and catch up on some DVR recordings. I watched the outstanding "America's Game" program from the NFL Network about the 2002 Tampa Bay Bucs. It sure brought back some memories from that fall in Tampa. Has it been almost five years already? Wow, time flies.

Unfortunately, I deleted the program when it was over, much to the dismay of my brother Matt, who I learned tonight also planned to watch it. I didn't realize his desire to see it until after the fact, and in hindsight it was stupid to delete it without checking. Hopefully the NFL Network will rerun it again before too long.

My sister Mary Beth graduates from high school on Sunday. I'm proud of her; she did amazingly well in her four years at Father Ryan, finishing an estimated third overall. FRHS no longer issues class ranking below #1 and #2; I can understand not embarrassing the bottom half of the class, but refusing to issue rankings for the top ten or twenty is odd. Then again, I also wouldn't have booked graduation on Mother's Day, but they didn't ask me.

A word to the wise: you can't ship magazines as Media Mail. I went to the post office this afternoon (after my stop by Eckerd) to send off some old Maxims that I sold on eBay. However, I made the mistake of identifying the content as magazines to the guy at the counter, who told me that mags are NOT allowed to be sent at media mail rate. The magazines sold for a paltry $.99, with $9.99 for shipping, but it will end up costing me $24 and change to send it (the winning buyer lives in Las Vegas.) I'll write it off to education (psychologically speaking); hopefully at least I'll get another positive feedback point out of the deal.

Recommended music: "Neon Bible" by Arcade Fire. Yes, it's worth it: buy it on CD and enjoy some great music. You'll be glad you did.
