They Buy You Time

Tuesday
May 3, 2005

"No apologies
At best they buy you time
Until you next step out of line
Please please please
No more remedies
My method is uncertain
It's a mess but it's working..."
-Fiona Apple "Please Please Please"

I woke up this morning to a knock on the door. It was about 8:30; yes, I know that's pretty late in the morning, but dammit I watched the Spurs/Nuggets game in OT until past 2 AM last night, so cut me some slack. "Maintenance," I heard shouted from the other end of the door. I groggily slid out of bed and opened the door.

I've heard an intermittent, slow leaking sound coming from behind the wall from my shower even since I had to have maintenance fix a problem where water wasn't running properly to my shower head. Yesterday I came home from work to a musty smell in the air, and I found that water had leaked from under the wall into the carpet in my dining room area. Lovely. Unfortunately I had worked past closing time for The Quarter at Ybor's staff, so I had every intention of getting something done this morning when I went in to pay my rent (since my rent isn't due until the 3rd). But the leak evidentally was going elsewhere, I imagine into the garage area below (better that than a neighbor's roof), but whatever the case it lead maintenance up here to me.

Fiona Apple
Fiona Apple is at odds with Epic.

They checked it out and said that they might have to call in a contractor to fix the pipe leading into my shower. Well that's great. I'm supposed to have a decision made in two weeks on if I want to buy this place, as they're turning the apartments into condos, and I have this happen to cloud my decision process. Maybe it's a sign or something. You'd think that a brand new apartment (which this was in April 2001 when I moved in) would be in tip-top shape if well cared for, which mine has been (unless you could the occasional, okay more than occasional, piles of clothes on the floor). But since I've been here the AC unit has died twice, and now we have pipe drama. Great.

The Fiona Apple song I quoted at the top here, Please Please Please, is a track from her unreleased album Extraordinary Machine, which Epic has held since May 2003 and refused to release. The song is in my possession, and it's really good, in my opinion. Epic said that there wasn't a good single on the CD, but Please Please Please is an outstanding track that, if Epic was savvy, it would release as a single, particularly since Seattle's KNDD has been playing it (and other tracks from the CD). If you get a chance (RIAA pricefixers be damned), track the song down. If you liked Fiona Apple's other stuff, you should enjoy this song as well.

Ironically, the song is interpreted by many people as Fiona speaking out against Epic and its attempt to hold her back. Perhaps that's all the more reason why the company doesn't want to release it...
