"But now she lives down by the ocean
She's takin' care to look for sharks
They hang out in the local bars
And they feed right after dark..."
-Jimmy Buffett "Fins"
Green Iguana last night was a fun time. I usually prefer sticking in Ybor (and there's a Green Iguana there), but the invite last night was to hit the one out by the Courtney Campbell Causeway. And I'm glad I went.
The crowd at the Causeway Iguana is usually a little more upscale. It reminds me of the Hyde Park crowd, only without the pretentiousness. A nice combination, I must say. I've been there a few times before, but last night was by far the most fun I've had there. There was a nice breeze coming from off the water, which helped with the outside temps. Even at night, outdoor venues in Tampa tend to get a bit hot during the spring/summer.
There's a beer girl there who I've talked with in my times there before. So we said our hellos and what not last night, and I found out her name is Fiona (that's a great name). She said she'd call me Smiley (she complimented me on my smile before). Fun times. At the end of the night she was asking if I'd be back on Friday. Might have to swing by and see what's up...
With the girls I was hanging out with there, it was fun as well. Though, with the place being so crowded, it was a bit tough to maneuver around, particularly on the side porch. But whatever, I enjoyed it. I also heard some more interesting stories about that crazy Temptation Island party I missed out on last Sunday (arrrgh).
One interesting discussion to overhear was two of the girls talking about how their asshole ex's had screwed them over. Yet they couldn't help but still be gripped by their emotions (particular one girl, who said she slept with a guy a few weeks back based simply on him reminded her of her ex). There was a time when I might've made fun of them or lambasted women for in general making horrible decisions when it comes to this. But while illogical, there seems to be a distinct pattern about things. Not too long ago, I read an excellent article about why women are attracted to jerks. Click here to read it for yourself. Here's an excerpt (and remember, I didn't write this, so don't shoot the messenger, okay?):
You and I must understand that women DON'T go deliberately looking for a jerk. Women are not "bad" people at all. Quite the opposite. But WOMEN ARE COMPLETELY CONTROLLED BY THIS ANCIENT MATING INSTINCT. Therefore, they have NO OTHER CHOICE but to go after ANY strong, dominant, untamable male. Or any male who can make her FEEL all those intense, uncontrollable feelings she lives for.
The key to understanding women's strange behavior is "they have NO OTHER CHOICE" but to fall for these types of males. And the jerk HAPPENS to be THAT TYPE of male. Or at least, the jerk has learned HOW TO PLAY that role.
Interesting, isn't it? Of course no woman admits to this, but in the world of romance words and actions are often quite different.
The downside to the Iguana was feeling tired today at work. But these are the sacrifices we make to live life...
I hear that
Natalie Angel is the latest person to be voted off of 10 News Survivor. She should go for the vacant sideline reporter position on ABC Monday Night Football that Melissa Stark exited from earlier this year. You think I'm kidding? Natalie clearly has the look to be in the spot (she's drop dead gorgeous), her ethnicity is a plus, and with the right sideline producer she could do just fine on-air.
PS2 college football is in full effect. In a thrilling game, I beat Utah with Mississippi State in the Sugar Bowl to win back-to-back national championships in Season 6 of NCAA 2002. They scored a TD with less than 1:00 to go to take a 3 point lead, only for my Heisman Trophy-winning RB to break a long TD run with :15 to go to give me the victory. In an unexpected surprise, the game gives you a back-to-back champs plaque as part of the victory. The only inexplicable part is that MSU is still at only 5 out of 6 stars on the prestige level, despite the back-to-back titles (not to mention three straight SEC Titles and three straight BCS bowl game wins). Still, it's not so bad considering that Mississippi State was only 2 out of 6 stars when I went there. However, with me getting Marshall up to 6 out of 6 after Season 3, they have been riding high ever since (including a pre-season #1 ranking going into Season 7).
Tonight the NBA held its draft lottery, where it unveiled who had landed the rights to the top three picks in the draft. Unfortunately I was asleep for it (taking a nap), so I missed the drama. It's a system in place to discourage teams from tanking down the stretch, and I for one really like it (though others, like the crew on Pardon the Interruption, decry it for having too many teams involved). Cleveland, the team with the worst record, ended up with the #1 selection and is all but guaranteed to take high school phenom LeBron James. In an interesting turn of events, the Memphis Grizzlies landed the #2 pick... but that selection goes to Detroit due to a 1997 trade. However, that trade had a caveat that would've allowed Memphis to retain the pick had they won the lottery. Granted, James wouldn't have been the most ideal fit for the Grizz, with them trading to get Mike Miller from Orlando during this past season, but still LeBron in Memphis would've been great news for Jerry West and company. Instead, Memphis gets nothing (well they do get Houston's pick, which is #13).
One note: if the Knicks had won the lottery (which had a less than 1% likelihood of happening), the world would've screamed, "Fix!" So from a credibility standpoint, it's a good thing that didn't happen, rig or not. As it is, James going to Cleveland is a great thing. Currently the Cavs can't draw at all, their franchise is in moribund condition, and landing the Ohio prep superstar will give the Cavs a major shot in the arm...
