Thickburger

Wednesday
May 21, 2003

Someone from sales brought in lunch for us here in the "Rock Barn" (the area of the Clear Channel building that holds 98 Rock and Thunder 103.5) from Hardee's. I've been trying to eat healthy, but I've also wanted to try the new Hardee's "thickburger". So, with a free one available, I decided to give it a try.

And, wow, it's delicious. There's no denying that. Hardee's is making a national rebranding effort, trying to establish itself on its burgers. I always connect the restaurant with roast beef sandwiches (which, fortunately, is one of the few items not expunged from the restaurant's menu). It probably would've been smarter for them to rename all the restaurants as "Carl's Jr.", as they're both owned by the same company (and Carl's Jr. is big out west). Plus it would have the "brand new" effect, versus people who had bad experiences with Hardee's in the past.

The free Hardee's in the Rock Barn had some people talking about french fries. One person was saying how he loved the french fries at McDonald's the best. I don't understand that. Maybe I'd like them better if they weren't cut to the size of toothpicks (okay that's exaggerating a bit), but still I'll take an order of fries from Wendy's anytime over McDonald's. Though nowadays I'm making an effort to not eat any fries at all (the whole unhealthy food thing is a negative).

I'm hooked again on the drug that is NCAA Football 2003. I'm in Year 6 with Mississippi State, with a ridiculous winning streak (something like 30 games). I'm taking on the only other undefeated team in the country, Utah, for the national title in the Sugar Bowl. If I win, that'd be back-to-back national titles and 3 in 4 years (the other being my final season with Marshall). Yeah, I know, Utah in the national title game doesn't exist. I was pulling for them to lose to BYU to set up a more realistic matchup (with one-loss Virginia Tech or Ohio State), but naturally the one time I actually wanted BYU to win, they lost. From there it's on to the best part of the game, the off-season recruiting. I can't express enough just how fun that game is...

Meanwhile, Brent Hatley was telling me this morning about some of the new features in Madden 2004, including assistant coaches and being able to set ticket prices!! Should be fun. I'm also going to try to figure out how to run my PS2 via my computer DSL connection to give the online gaming a try. I'm told the online play is a very fun part of things.

There's a website out there that archives old website. Want to know what ESPN.com looked like in 1996? It's there. While not perfect, it's by far the most detailed and exhaustive internet archiving system I've ever seen:

web.archive.org

It's highly recommended. And from the looks of things, they're becoming more and more proficient in their archiving, which will only help things for on down the road. I found it fascinating to look at old archives from my webpage from back in the day. It's amazing the little things that you can forget over time.

I looked for myself on the Major League Wrestling show that aired Monday night on Sunshine Network (from the show I went to in Orlando earlier this month). Unfortunately, the lightning was pretty poor and it was tough to see much in the crowd. But they did air the Ikuto Hidaka vs. Fuego Guerrero match, as well as the Funk vs. Corino main event, which were both excellent matches. Much better than the pathetic efforts currently being given on WWE Raw and WWE Smackdown...

The season finale of 24 aired last night. I missed out on much of Season 2, but I caught the final two episodes and found them to be great, even without having seen much of the backstory. It also ended in a cliffhanger, playing ahead of the next season.

I'm tempted to buy the "V" mini-series on DVD. It's only like $20, and as I recall (when it originally aired 20 years ago), it's really good.
