Drained Lakers

Friday
May 16, 2003

The Spurs have done it! They beat the three-time defending champion L.A. Lakers 4-2, winning the series and advancing to the Western Conference Finals. The last time the Spurs beat the Lakers in a postseason series was 1999, the same year the Spurs won the NBA Championship (albeit in a strike-shortened, Phil Jackson-less season). I'd love to see the Spurs win another one this year.

I asked Scott Massey on the phone this morning if he knew the last Eastern Conference team besides the Bulls, Pistons and Celtics to win an NBA Title. He actually got the answer pretty quick (the Dr. J-led 76ers, in 1983), then asked who the last team before that was. I didn't have an answer; Scott guessed the New York Knicks (1973), but in actuality it was the Washington Bullets (1978). Old school.

Meanwhile, the Kings and Mavs are going to a Game 7. Talk about a great series, this one has been exciting, high-scoring and dramatic. The fans in Big D are hoping for an all-Texas Western conference finals. We'll find out soon enough if that's going to happen.

This weekend is wide open, which is fine by me. Should be a good chance to get some more work done for Picklock Music. The first trial run (for the band Mostly Robot should go out early next week. The only thing on the agenda is a possibility at the end of the weekend, as I've been invited to a "Temptation Island" party out in Clearwater on Sunday... but I'm not sure yet if I'm going (there's some drama behind this one).

I cannot express enough the frustration I feel toward my PS2 right now. The "Disc Read Error" is still causing problems, and I'm very close to sending it back to Sony to get fixed AGAIN. Add to that the frequent lockups on NCAA Football 2003 (including twice now in my Fiesta Bowl championship game with Mississippi State vs. Nebraska), and I'm beyond livid. The sad thing is, the PS2 is an outstanding game system and is a great time... when it works properly.

In less than two weeks I'll be back in Nashville. My sister Mary Beth has her 8th grade graduation coming up, and I'm going to spend a long weekend back home. Should be nice. It's always great to get back and see friends and family and what not.

Last night ABC re-ran an episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live from a few weeks ago with Monica Lewinsky as the guest host. It was interesting; I missed most of the beginning, so I'm not sure if Kimmel held back on the thousands of possible crude jokes that could've been made. Kimmel usually will say anything to anyone, so who knows.

I hear that a major news story in Tampa this morning is the recovery of a giant inflated Twinkie bar that disappeared from a bakery in Brandon on Tuesday night. Apparently it was found not too far from where I work. For the record I had nothing to do with it, and when you think about it, who in their right mind would steal an inflated Twinkie?!? It's worth $7,000, so you're looking at felony theft, but its value to you is going to be about nil and it's not like a giant inflated Twinkie is the easiest thing in the world to hide...

Time now to hit the bank before it closes and make some deposits...
