Air Rage

Monday
March 29, 2004

It seems that my comments in Saturday's column did not sit well with everyone. My friend Ryan Priest sent this response via e-mail:

While I appreciate your concerns about "your" space being invaded on an airliner, please be aware that the 5'9 "jackass" in front of you (namely, me) paid for the use of a fully functional airline seat. I'd hate to have the beanpole jackass behind me preventing me from relaxing on the 4-hour cross country flight I'm taking next month.

I'd love to hear some other opinions on this one... One way to settle that problem is to get to your seat first, extend your legs, and drive your knees into the seat back in front of you. Then the only way that seat is moving back is by you ending up with a broken femur.

Another thing that gets me is the whole "put any extra bags underneath the seat in front of you" deal. I've never ever done that; it just couldn't happen short of me contorting my body like the main character in Metroid.

I need to get feedback from my friend James (who's 6'5") on this one. At 6'2" it's bad; at 6'5" I'm sure it's worse. I suppose this is the price I have to pay to be able to see well in crowds.

Lex & Terry debuted in the Tampa market this morning on 102-5 The Bone. This is the move that Cox Tampa should've made three years ago when it inexplicably put the god-awful John Boy & Billy show on the station (who Bubba The Love Sponge destroyed in a one-sided pummeling). With Bubba now gone from terrestrial radio in Tampa, it's going to be an interesting fight between Lex & Terry, Bob & Tom on Thunder 103.5 and whatever 98 Rock decides on as its permanent morning show choice in the battle for the massive audience share (especially among men) that Bubba held.

Lou's stereo

I bought a new stereo (pictured above) last night at Circuit City. It is replacing the Aiwa that I'd had since 1997. That Aiwa, which I paid $300 for, had been slowly degenerating through the years. It would no longer play CDs, instead making a loud clicking sound when I tried to listen to a disc. That came after it began being sensitive to CDs that had been burned from a computer or that had slight scratches on them. Also, it mysteriously would only play audio from my TV through one speaker (despite it playing fine from the radio from both). Last month the tape deck that handled recording gave way, breaking and getting stuck.

So now I have this wonderful (and much less expensive) JVC unit. It sounds great, it does everything I want, the radio reception is wonderful, oh and it'll play MP3s. That was the extra touch that put it over the top for me. Good times.
