Crunch Time

Thursday
March 6, 2003

"Sometime to be near you
Is to be unable to hear you
My love, I'm a few years older than you..."
-Fleetwood Mac "Edge Of Seventeen"

There's a big, big difference between a TV station at 4:37 PM and a radio station at 4:37 PM. In TV, that's usually crunch time, especially at stations which have a 5 PM newscast. People are hurried, there's a frenzied atmosphere in the air, and there's an urgency you can sense in people's voices and in the expressions they wear on their faces.

In contrast with that, at a rock radio station, there's casual conversation, a ball bouncing in the hall, and randomness with the feel of those brilliant "This is SportsCenter" promos that ESPN runs. I mean, as I typed that last sentence someone walked by Bubba's office carrying part of a portable basketball goal.

That's not to say that this is all fun and games. But radio operates at a much different pace. Maybe with the exception of sports or news/talk stations, radio is a much looser environment. And I for one think this is a wonderful thing, considering that I work in radio.

I have the CD burner on Bubba's computer and on Spice's going right now. No more packs will be going out on Airborne Express today, but I need to have CDs for tomorrow, when we have more labels and more AE (not American Eagle) bags. And two at once is better than the one I have at home, so here I stay, for the moment.

The Tampa Bay Lightning are making a strong push for the NHL Playoffs -- but so are the Nashville Predators. I'd given up on them before the All-Star break, but they're making a major run toward a possible first-ever post-season berth. But for some reason, ESPN never seems to show the Lightning or the Predators. But I see the Minnesota Wild on there all the time. As Ned would say: "What's up with that?"

Meanwhile, Time-Warner's impasse with the Sunshine Network is putting a major cramp on my style as far as the Lightning go. Without Sunshine, there's not any local Lightning games on TV. This isn't beneficial for anyone, except maybe DirecTV.

How about those Arizona Cardinals, losing both Jake Plummer AND David Boston. It's amazing to me that they didn't stick the franchise tag on Boston, cocaine allegations or not. Now they need a QB, RB and two WRs. Have fun guys...
