Lou Pickney's Online Commentary

High Gloss Finish

March 10, 2003

I watched the two episodes of Jimmy Kimmel Live last night that I'd missed from the past week. And, as usual, it was funny. I'm not so sure about the "Angry Naked Pat" kid (which seems to have the capacity to grow old very quick). But overall, JKL is a great show that you really need to check out (assuming you're in the U.S. and in a market where the show airs).

Of course, assuming a U.S. audience for this column is not necessarily a realistic prognostication. I've written in this space before about how many different countries visit LouPickney.com every month. It's fascinating to me, and at the same time quite a compliment. For someone in, say, Iceland to take the time to visit... I appreciate it very much. And to think, without the internet the odds of me having any communication with someone from there would be much lower. I love the internet.

War coverage is dominating the news these days, and I know of some friends in the TV news business who are on standby for a "war coverage schedule". Yet another reason to love being in the job I have now...

I'm wearing my "Tennessee Oilers" shirt today. It's one of those funny things in sports, the attempt by Bud Adams to keep the Oilers name alive despite moving the franchise. It overwhelmingly failed, but by renaming the team as the "Titans" they managed to connect very well with the Nashville community. Of course, Big Dick (Richard Peirce) one-upped me by wearing a Tampa Bay Bandits USFL t-shirt to work today. Now that's old school.

I caught some of the new show "Oliver Beene" on Fox last night. Perhaps a little too much like "The Wonder Years", but picking David Cross (from Mr. Show) for narration duties was an excellent choice.

Lookout for the Chargers in 2003. Every year there's a surprise team or two in the NFL. I think this is the season that San Diego has a breakthrough year. With David Boston, defenses will have to stay honest against the pass. Pro Bowl fullback Lorenzo Neal (formerly of the Titans and most recently the Bengals) is now in to block for superstar RB LaDainian Tomlinson, and Drew Brees is proving to be a capable QB. Land a stud DT in the first round of the draft, maybe pick up a safety in the second round (replacing Rodney Harrison), and voila the stage is set.

Of course, I say that now and they'll end up going 5-11. But still, I like their chances.

The trip to New Orleans is just four days away. I'm starting to get excited for it. I love that city, and even during the post Mardi Gras time it'll be a blast. Catch some college hoops, hang out with friends I haven't seen in awhile, and of course the craziness that is Bourbon Street. Yeah, that's the one...
