Name This Bug

Friday
June 11, 2004

I've become, yet again, hooked on the computer game The Sims. It's amazing how that game can pull you in and make you lose all track of time. I hadn't played it in months, but my sister Mary Beth mentioned it when she was in town, and lead to me digging out the CD-Rom... and promptly watching hours of time disappear in a flash.

After a few delays, I should finally be receiving my new SprintPCS Sanyo SCP-5300 phone on Monday. Same number, but it'll be a new company (Sprint, as opposed to AT&T). As previously mentioned, my current cell phone has seen better days.

Rainy season has arrived here in Tampa. It didn't arrive with the usual June 1 punctuality of years past, but it's in effect now. You look at the 7 day forecast on the news, and you see a 40-50% chance for rain every day. But that's not far from the truth... during rainy season you just never know. But I'll take this over snow and ice and cold in November and December and January and February, thank you very much.

Mystery bug
Do you recognize this green-colored bug?

My friend Stacey Luckey at work spotted an unusual looking bug outside of her house last month and snapped a couple of digital photos of it. The results are shown in the picture to the right, but unfortunately even with her high pixel camera, she had to stay far enough away from the bug that I couldn't blow it up to a ridiculously large image. I've been meaning to put this on here for awhile, but she mentioned it again today so I figured I'd put this up here. Any entomologists out there who can help out?

The Pistons went up 2-1 on the Lakers last night, doing so in impressive fashion. Detroit's defense is really something special. When you can hold an offense with Kobe AND Shaq to 66 points in an NBA Finals game... you're doing something right.

(Bug Update: On 6/22/2006, I put an ad up on the Blog$hares game linking to this page. That lead to information from Chris Hamilton, who identified the insect as a leaf hopper. So, more than two years later, the mystery has been solved.)
