300 vs. 50

Saturday
June 7, 2003

"Why do you look when you've already found it?
What did you find that could leave you walking by?"
-Something Corporate "Walking By"

As I type this, there's a pitching duel taking place in Chicago, as Yankees pitcher Roger Clemens (going for win #300) battles Cubs pitcher Kerry Wood (going for win #50). Scott Massey called me at 1:30 PM, just as I was waking up, to celebrate Wood's historic attempt at his 50th win. He said it in jest, but those numeric milestones in sports sometimes deserve to be taken with a shade or two more levity. I mentioned that Wood needs to show up Clemens by having a big "50" on his glove (like the "300" Clemens had on the glove in the first innings in his first attempt at 300 wins, which came against the BoSox last month). What amazes me is that Clemens threw a 99 mile per hour pitch against Sammy Sosa in the first inning. 99 mph!?! Unreal.

I've been making the phone call rounds today. It's amazing how quick time can slip by and how easy it is to lose touch with people if you're not careful (even in the era of Instant Messages and e-mails).

Note to Pam Iorio: please, please get the street cleaners to hit 22nd Street between the Crosstown Expressway and I-4. The debris out in the road is getting ridiculous. And I'm not just talking about the dagger-sized piece of metal that ruined one of my tires. There's all sorts of bit and pieces of things that I'd really prefer not driving over, not to mention the big pot hole next to the Columbia.

I found out last night that Planet 92.7 (WRVC-FM) in Huntington is bringing in the Lex & Terry show soon. It was between us (Bubba) and L&T. But I know Planet's PD, and I respect his decision. And in this case I'll be cheering for Lex & Terry to do well, as that could open up some doors for us in Huntington. Plus after John Boy & Billy posed for that picture with the pig in Cox's abortive effort to run JB&B against Bubba in Tampa (which Cox ended after a year of horrid ratings on the longtime underperforming WHPT), I can't say I'm the biggest fans of theirs, Clear Channel breathren or not. But Bubba is the antidote to Lex & Terry (driving them out of mornings in West Palm, Ft. Myers and Macon), and perhaps success by L&T will open doors for us with WAMX. I for one would love to see it.
