Right now my friend James is in the front row at a Norah Jones concert in Jacksonville. Lucky guy. Norah Jones played a free show in Clearwater last night, but a drenching rainstorm, and other plans already made, precluded me from going to it. It will be interesting to see five years from now if Norah Jones is an established name, or if she was the flavor of the year (like Natalie Imbruglia, Nelly Furtado, etc.)
The New York Yankees were no-hit last night by the Houston Astros, who used six pitchers to combine for the no-no. That absolutely took me by surprise, as I was watching earlier in the game and the Yanks had the bases loaded (Jason Giambi reached via being hit by a pitch, and I have to assume that the others made it on base as well without getting a hit).
Meanwhile, the damn New Jersey Nets beat the San Antonio Spurs by one last night. Ugh. The Spurs got into foul trouble in the first half, but had a chance to tie it with a three with mere seconds to go. It's not been the most up-tempo basketball in the past two games, but at least every game has been competitive and close. It was humorous watching David Stern play spin control before the game last night in an interview with Mike Tirico, particularly when it came to the league's declining ratings.
The newest NBA franchise is the expansion Charlotte Bobcats. While I'm glad they passed on the WNBA-esque nickname of "Spirit", the Bobcats nickname seems much more suited for Overton High School in Nashville than an NBA team. I'm just waiting for the first sportscaster who calls them the Pussycats (I remember during my high school football days when some guys on the freshmen team were admonished by one of the coaches for using that particular phrase in trash talking them as we left Overton following a win).
As I was typing that last paragraph, James called me live from the Norah Jones concert for a live listen-in. Sounded remarkably good for a cell phone to cell phone long distance deal. Good times...
