Hold Up The Cash

Friday
July 9, 2004

I finally watched the 2004 World Series of Poker last night (DVRed from ESPN from earlier in the week), and I was a bit underwhelmed. Maybe it's because the Travel Channel does such a fantastic job with the World Poker Tour, or maybe it's because I didn't like the way they crammed the game into a single hour (the Travel Channel gives it two). I also recorded the Seven Card Stud finals, which featured a guy named Men Nguyen (pronounced "Men When") who proceeded to get tipsy on Corona while playing high stakes poker. A couple of beers to loosen up is one thing, but "Men The Master" as he's called spilled a beer on the table. What is this, Friday night cards with the boys or a televised championship match? And the guy wouldn't shut up, trying to agitate his opponents.

I've found a few sites for playing Texas Hold 'Em online, and I have not faired nearly as well at it as I thought I would've. Good thing it's only for play money on there, eh?

The rite of summer, also known as the opening of the first NFL training camp, isn't too far away. We're reaching that sports-starved part of the year at this point, and I for one am really looking forward to things picking up. Other sports are nice and all, but football is king. Sorry baseball fans, but the NFL is the national pastime now...
