Numb From Watching TV

Sunday
July 11, 2004

"And if we gather, if we fall
Over the great unknown
Things are gonna change in our favor"
-For Squirrels "Mighty K.C."

I used this dropquote because I happened to hear this song on Friday during 97X's "Classic Alternative Lunch". I forget sometimes that time is passing, but for the uninformed, this cool band called For Squirrels hit the scene in the fall of 1995 with a song I really liked called Mighty K.C. Interpretation is what it is, but on the base it's about hearing of hundreds of deaths on the news (presumably) but being numb to them from watching TV, the way that hearing news on TV like that in high volumes can take away from the individual repercussions of each death. Or maybe I'm digging beyond the base (this is part of the reason why I don't like song interpretations). This article claims that the song was actually written in honor of Kurt Cobain. Anyway, the grand irony is that the band was involved in a tragic van accident coming back to Florida following a concert in New York. The lead singer and bassist died in the accident. As the aforementioned article said: "I'm not sure if there is still a reason to buy this album. If you liked college radio back in '95, then you'll dig Example. Otherwise, Example is an example of a place that rock music [went] and will probably never return to."

God, now I'm feeling sad AND old. Let's move on.

Rez for the PS2
This is a screenshot from the obscure game Rez.

I finally managed to win an eBay auction for the PS2 game Rez. I first read about this game while in St. Louis for Mike Miller's wedding in June 2002. Sadly, soon thereafter Sega of America discontinued it, as apparently sales of the synaesthesia standout didn't cut the mustard. However, my copy of it is set to arrive tomorrow. I can't wait to try it. I did not buy the "Trance Vibrator" (no, I'm not making this up) that is sold in Japan to go with the game and that apparently helps in playing the game. For some reason import peripherals work, but the import games won't. Also, as IGN said about Rez: "This was obviously much harder to design and program than it looks. Every time you fire, and every time an enemy checks out, that registers as a beat or effect in the music track that backs the level." IGN says it took three years to make the game. Interesting, no?

If you're interested in getting into the world of web publishing (and it's amazingly easy to do so, I must say), check out this post from Webmaster World. It's more than two years old, but it's still spot-on accurate on the way to build a smart, strong and profitable web venture based on content. Content is KING.
