Lou Pickney's Online Commentary

College Gridiron

Monday
January 5, 2004

I tell you what, I can't wait for this weekend's big national title game between LSU and USC. It's going to be great!

Oh, wait, that's not going to happen. Nevermind. Meanwhile, word came out yesterday that "at least six of the seven [BCS] computers do not take into account whether a team is playing at home or on the road." Unreal.

Senator John Edwards
Senator John Edwards' only shot at winning in 2004 might be by taking an anti-BCS stance.

Of course, if the computers had not been involved in the system this year, LSU wouldn't have even had a chance to play for the BCS Title. I could rant on, but I know that I'm mostly preaching to the choir on this one (among those who care about college football).

I'll even take this argument one step further... If one of those stuck-in-the-pack Democratic presidential candidates wants to take a run at Howard Dean, how about making a campaign promise to force college football to install a playoff system??? You think I'm kidding?!? It would have an impact. As my Grandma Pickney would say, are you savvy?

What's the over/under on when the "Britney Spears got married to Jason Alexander from Seinfeld" jokes start kicking in? Actually you should bet the over, since I just made one on carligula.com. But as much of a publicity stunt that this may or may not have been for Spears, it's even more pub for the wonderful city of Las Vegas. Ahhh, Vegas. Good times.

Speaking of Vegas, I need to get miscellaneous travel opportunities sorted out, pronto. Gary and Rod are wanting to book Las Vegas: Part Two for this August (because, hey, the heat of the summer is the time to go to the desert!) But I must admit that after last year's fun, the idea is certainly appealing...

In reading through some commentaries from last year, it made me laugh to see me celebrate having 2,200 hits in a day. Thanks mostly to DraftKing.com, my small collection of websites cracked the 15,000 hit mark in one day for the first time on 12/29/2003 (according to the info from Google AdSense). Once the NFL season ends, that number could easily double (as interest in the 2004 NFL Draft rises). I find it fascinating that so many people come across my sites. Hopefully you find that they're worth your time...
