My friend Scott Massey was over here yesterday, playing against me in NCAA Football 2004, when the most bizarre play I've ever seen in video game sports history took place. Stranger than the fielders being able to go into the stands in MLB Baseball on the Nintendo, or Rob Van Dam hitting a Five Star Frog Splash off the top of the Smackdown fist through Eddie Guerrero on a table on the floor in SD: Shut Your Mouth. This one just defied logic.
With the score tied at 7 with :08 to go in the second quarter, I had the ball (as Oregon State, playing in Morgantown against West Virginia). My QB (Adam Rothemfluh) scrambled out of the pocket, was hit by a defender, and fumbled. The ball squirted free, and what looked like a rugby scrum proceeded to take place. Incredibly, no one on either team could pick up the ball. It was like something out of a B-rate action movie, with guys falling down in tandem all at the same time. It started off with us laughing uproariously (and Scott even having to pause it because he was laughing so hard), to us getting pissed off that no one could pick it up. The half had long expired, and there we were, swarming around the ball like a bunch of hornets. I half-expected it to get pushed out of the back of Scott's end zone (which I presume would've been a touchback), but instead it went out of bounds at Scott's 20 yard line and, mercifully, the first half ended. It was a one-time fluke, as the second half played normally, like any other game would. Bizarre...
