Just Bring It

Thursday
January 9, 2003

The first of several long weekends is here. Thank goodness. A little down time on the Tampa tip is just what the doctor ordered.

The song "Don't Know Why" by Norah Jones is a personal favorite, and I'm glad to see her get some Grammy consideration. And there aren't enough positive things I can say about Avril Lavenge (let's just hope she doesn't fall victim to the overexposure bug). I know people though who've predicted that Avril will change the entire course of music, ushering in an era of female pop-rock artists who play their own instruments (as opposed to the Britney Spears/Christina Aguilera heavily produced pop). Not that I dislike either of them, but changing the flow of pop music is a powerful thing.

I never really realized until yesterday how much Puddle of Mudd sounds like Nirvana. If you doubt it, check out the song "She Hates Me". Great tune.

I had to hustle at work this morning to get stuff ready for awards. The best newscast I produced last year was the July 25, 2002 edition of "10 News This Morning" where there was an active hunt for a kidnapped sheriff deputy's 17-year-old daughter in the 6-7 AM hour. Actually, I feared that the tape was lost forever when it disappeared just hours after it originally aired, but maybe three months later it popped back up in TOC. You have no idea how happy I was to find it.

Anyway, some big award deadlines are coming up soon. So I had to get the tape edited and dubbed (into some crazy formats, like dubbing DVC to Beta SP, but mostly to VHS). We're going to send it in for AP, Murrow and Peabody award consideration. Wish me luck. I'm not sure if I'll be able to get it in for the regional (Suncoast) Emmys or not. We'll see. To their credit, my station's management is willing to pay for entry fees. Wish me luck.

Scott Massey just called me on the phone; he's coming over to play some video games. Should be fun. Gotta show him the ropes in WWE Smackdown: Shut Your Mouth.

I've been deliberating this whole shaved head thing lately. I love the look, and it has its fun points (hot girls who are total strangers come up and rub my head) and points of power (I've had guys see me, look at my shaved head, and literally walk to the other side of the street, as if I'm going to beat their ass or something). But lately I've had a number of girls suggest that I should grow my hair out. I e-mailed Velvet (the girl who originally talked me into shaving my head more than two years ago). She tried to convince me that the shaved head trumped getting action. Not so sure about that. The funny thing is, around town guys with shaved heads usually are with a girl. And some girls really go for it. I don't know.

Of course, with the forthcoming job interview tour that's all but set in stone, I'd like to not come in doubling as Stone Cold Steve Austin. Oh, these complications...
