Fiesta Thriller

Saturday
January 4, 2003

"34-15, 34-10, I'm being generous here... Miami all the way."
-WTSP anchor and Hurricanes fan Reginald Roundtree, predicting the final score of the Miami/Ohio State national title game

I'm still shocked about the results of last night's Miami/OSU football championship game in the Fiesta Bowl. Wow... Incredible. A double OT thriller, with enough drama to keep even non-football fans drawn to the tube. Miami fans have reason to be pissed, though. The play where Buckeyes RB Maurice Clarett stole the ball away from Hurricanes defender Sean Taylor was a questionable takeaway at best (looked like simultaneous possession, where the tie should go to Taylor). And the pass intereference call against Miami on 4th down in the first OT was sketchy.

But with that said, it was a thriller. Thank goodness college football got rid of the ties. Think how anti-climatic that would've been had the game ended in a 17-all tie. Instead, we have a classic for the ages to enjoy.

It's still amazing to me, though. Miami's team has such incredible speed... But it goes to show that you never can tell.

Here's hoping that Hurricanes RB Willis McGahee isn't seriously hurt. He's a fun player to watch...
