Basketball Season

Sunday
February 11, 2007

It's February, the NFL season is over... and that means it's college basketball time in my book. Yes, it's been going on for months, but for football-first people like me, hoops goes on hold until this time of year.

Yesterday early afternoon I watched LSU and Arkansas go down to the wire in Baton Rouge. That afternoon's Texas Tech/Oklahoma State game was a double-overtime thriller, followed up by Florida giving a few lessons to Kentucky last night in Lexington. Fun stuff, for sure. I also watched some of the Southern Illinois/Creighton game; the Missouri Valley Conference has the #5 RPI in the nation, which blows my mind. Evansville (my alma mater) hasn't made the post-season since 1999 (the year I graduated), and they ditched the cool sleeved jerseys when Jim Crews left, but it's very interesting to know that they're in there with some great basketball talent.

I was glad to see that I am still in my remote control prime, as I managed to balance website browsing, listening to the NASCAR radio broadcast of the Bud Shootout on Sirius, and flipping channels between FOX (NASCAR), CBS (end of the Pro Bowl), and ESPN (Florida vs. Kentucky.) This was a "chill out at my apartment and don't plan anything" weekend, something I needed after cramming a month's worth of activities into last weekend.

Draft King is still going strong, with thousands and thousands of readers hitting the site on a daily basis. For something I started for fun on this webpage, it has sprouted into quite the successful side venture.

The inordinate amount of media attention given to the death of Anna Nicole Smith is slightly amusing to me. It doesn't surprise me at all -- it's a "talker" story, to be sure, with so many bizarre sub-plots to go with a simple premise (gold digging model marries elderly billionaire man, then fights his family for years over the inheritance.)

Plus, it gave us an instant classic moment from Joanie Laurer (aka Chyna) on Larry King Live. I don't know how long the YouTube video will last (and I'd post it here, but embedding is disabled for this one) but it's one of more bizarro moments I've seen in TV in the past few years.
