Lou Pickney's Online Commentary

Blue Lighter

Friday
February 20, 2004

My Honda Accord has a tentative name -- "Lou Junior" -- given to it by Scott Massey. Whether that name sticks remains to be seen, but I treat that car like it's a child. I really really do like driving it, and it's such an upgrade from the Dodge Neon on so many levels.

The work week is over, thank goodness. Vacations are supposed to refresh you, but in a place like New Orleans... well you lay it all out on the line. So a little relaxation is in order now.

I've launched my new webpage to campaign against the FCC. It's called AbolishTheFCC.com. With the politics gone mad in an organization that supposed to simply regulate the licensing of television and radio stations, it would be best to close up shop and start from scratch, with a new commission that worries about keeping stations within their prescribed broadcasting signal strength (you'd be surprised how much this is allowed to lapse) and monitoring the presence of pirate broadcasters instead of trying to play Big Government Knows Best about content. The page itself is in its beginning stages, but eventually I hope that it will be useful in helping to make people aware of how a group of five commissioners in a virtual ivory tower in Washington, DC is working hard to take away the choice of every local community in this country to decide for itself what is and isn't acceptable programming on its airwaves.

Tomorrow it's Gasparilla 2004, Part Two, as the Night Parade rolls through 7th Avenue in Ybor City. Hmm, so much for the relaxation part. Rest assured though that I will have my digital camera primed and ready for the fun.

Super Millionaire
Lou wants to be a Millionaire.

Thanks to my DVR (Digital Video Recorder), I have been able to play catchup on this week's syndicated run of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire. Those half hour syndicated shows are the best to watch on DVR, since they are so packed with commercials and what not. When you skip past the ads, promos and chit-chat and boil it down to the good part (the game itself), it really flies by fast.

I'm 0-for-3 in trying to qualify for the Super Millionaire phone in game. The phone in contest runs through Monday, February 23, so you can get in on the fun, too. 1-800-999-7878 between 7 PM and 3 AM Eastern (one call per day). On Wednesday's attempt, I wasn't properly prepared (i.e. no pen and paper) and got the order jumbled. Yesterday I incorrectly put that Kansas was more northern than Nebraska, so I was out on the first question. Today I got the first question correct (about relative sizes), but then on question two it was about the release of pop songs. I'd never heard of one of them ("Lucky Star"), so I missed it and was out. But I'll keep trying as long as I can. You should, too...
