Judging By Tomorrow

I finally had the chance to see the Fox show The Simple Life featuring Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie tonight. And, believe it or not, it was actually quite entertaining. It was almost like a female, real-life version of Beavis and Butt-head. In tonight's episode, the two young women tried working at a Sonic restaurant (and I can only imagine the cringing by Sonic's corporate big wigs when this aired). The funniest part was when the girls intentionally screwed up the sign to read "1/2 anal wiener burgers" (or something to that effect) and then tried to hide the ladder. It was straight out of Beavis working the fry machine at Burger World. And while so-called "Reality TV" is in many ways scripted, the managers were getting legit pissed about it all (or they were amazing actresses -- I tend to believe the former).

David Paymer
David Paymer is a great villain in his role on Line of Fire.

These days I'm not much for TV, but Tuesday night is now TV night for me. Fox has 24 on from 9-10 PM Eastern, then ABC has the excellent Line of Fire on from 10-11 PM Eastern. Tonight's Line of Fire was even better than the pilot. In particular, the writing was great for the undercover FBI agent. Don't you hate it in movies or TV shows when a character that's trying to deceive someone says something totally stupid or acts dumb to give themselves away? That seems to happen 99% of the time. But on this show, the FBI agent keeps saying things that I would say if I were in that situation in real life. Friggin' brilliant, I tell you. Plus with the "new agent from training school" having her dialogue kept to a minimum, the acting was pretty strong. Here's hoping ABC keeps it alive.

Also, in a note from last week, David Paymer actually was in the movie Quiz Show (I had commented that he looked like he should be an extra from that film more than a mob boss). I also learned that he was nominated for an Academy Award for his role in Mr. Saturday Night. Whatever the case, he plays his role on Line of Fire extremely well. You can't help but buy into the character he portrays.

Speaking of shows on the roster of the American Broadcasting Company, I happily learned earlier today that Jimmy Kimmel Live has been renewed for a second season. Horray for ABC. I've lamented before about the great shows that ABC has killed before their time; luckily JKL lives to see a second year. Hopefully $inclair will finally give the show clearance on its ABC affiliates (if I still lived in Huntington, I would be unable to see it, since $inclair owns WCHS -- it also owns WVAH in an illegal duopoly, but that's another matter for another time).

My Tampa Bay Hustlers fantasy football team advanced to the semi-finals with a win over the Windy City Whiplash this past weekend. Next up: a trip to Washington, DC to face the Capital Punishers. Brook is the only owner ever to win back-to-back titles (1995 and 1996). He can prevent me from matching that mark this year (since I won the league last year). Time for bed now -- hopefully without nightmares about Culpepper-to-Moss (both of whom are on his roster)...
