Golden Golf

Wednesday
December 26, 2003

Here's hoping that you all had a very merry and happy Christmas. My Christmas here in Nashville was wonderful. For the first time since 1998, I was home to enjoy it without being under the confines of working on the overnight shift. That made a very huge difference.

The Christmas present haul was nice, with some really fun games coming into my possession as a result. WWE Smackdown: Here Comes The Pain and Tiger Woods Golf 2004 are both, in particular, outstanding. Tony Hawk Underground should be a great game as well once I have the chance to develop the story mode on my memory card.

Sticky bun
You have to act fast if you want a piece of the Christmas sticky bun.

There are some great Christmas traditions about being here at home... Like on Christmas morning, my Mom fixes two traditional dishes every year. One is this delicious sticky bun recipe; the other is a "make ahead breakfast" with eggs, cheese and ham/bacon. Mmmmm.

Seriously though, you would've had to have grown up in my house to understand the special tradition of the Christmas morning breakfast. The sticky bun and make ahead breakfast is a once a year treat. No real reason -- it's not as if it's terribly expensive to make or anything -- but it's part of how my immediate family celebrates the holiday. Much like the one present opened on Christmas Eve tradition, it's just become part of the unique history that we celebrate every year. But if we had it all the time, it would lose its meaning. For it to be an annual event, well it just makes Christmas all the more special.

My sister Mary Beth did very well in her solo singing performances at the Christmas Eve church service. I don't talk about my disdain for organized religion on here very much (though if you ever want to get people riled up, start doing that and see what comes flying out of the hornets nest at you), but I'm willing to sacrifice an hour or so of my time per year to help keep the peace on the home front on that end. But I did want to hear my sister sing, and I got the chance to do that, which was nice.

For being Christmastime, the weather in Nashville is surprisingly mild. Not that I'm complaining. Living in Tampa has made me hypersensitive to the cold. I brought my huge red-and-black ski jacket, and while I doubt I'll need it, I have it just in case. And there's something to be said for that.
