Race To The Airport

Wednesday
December 24, 2003

10:30 AM. Dave and I were riding in his truck from work, trying to play beat the clock to get me to the Tampa International Airport. We saw a backup of traffic from the on-ramp onto the Spruce Street exit. "I know a back way," Dave said. And, luckily, he did.

On this day, I won the race against time. For my 11:15 AM flight, I needed to have my bags checked by 10:45 AM. I made it by 10:42. Talk about riding the razor's edge. I had intended to be awake and over to DigiQuest much earlier today. But you know what happens sometimes in the world of good intentions.

Last night I stayed up to watch the always-enthralling ABC show Line Of Fire (watch it at 10 Eastern on Tuesday night -- trust me, it's a great program). From there I ended up falling asleep on the couch watching a hilarious Dave Chapelle special on HBO.

I woke up an hour later in excruciating pain... the return of the headaches. God, I had hoped I was done with those. One soma, and then to sleep in my bed. But an hour later I woke up in horrendous pain again. So more medication to get me to dreamland.

This I'm writing not to complain, but so you understand where I'm coming from when I play beat the clock on Christmas Eve. It's not out of ignorance or false bravado at my own ability to beat the clock. But when you're all pain medicined up, sleep isn't an option -- it's a necessity.

My family has a really cool Christmas tradition when it comes to opening presents. In a melding of tradition from my Mom's side (which opened on Christmas Eve) and my Dad's side (which opened on Christmas morning), we open one present on Christmas Eve and then the rest the next morning. It actually has worked out very, very well through the years. Tonight I opened Tony Hawk Underground for the PS2, while my bro Matt opened WWE: Here Comes the Pain (both of which are very fun games). So good times on that...
