Reruns

Sunday
December 29, 2002

"There are three ways to do things around here: the right way, the wrong way and the way I do it."
-Sam Rothstein in Casino

"When you thought it was over
You could feel it all around
Everybody's out to get you
Don't you let it drag you down"
-Coldplay "Everything's Not Lost"

There's something really fun about watching episodes of Mr. Show for the first time. I don't want to burn through them quickly, as they're not making any more episodes, but there are levels of hilarity reached on that show that few others can achieve. The parody of Carrot Top (with "Blueberry Head"), Screwballz (dating game parody), etc. is comedy gold.

I finally watched Casino on DVD last night. Another wonderful Christmas present, and another masterpiece by Martin Scorsese. Very nice. Sharon Stone is brilliant in that movie.

It was interesting watching the two NFL games yesterday. Both had a playoff-level intensity (especially the Eagles/Giants game). This was the first time I've seen a regular season game without fantasy football implications for me since 1993 (though technically the FFL "Pro Bowl" is this week), since we eliminated the Week 17 game from our league for this year. Instead of wondering how many yards Amani Toomer had receiving, I just watched and enjoyed. It was nice, though if it had been Arizona vs. Detroit I might've taken a sledgehammer to the TV (or changed the channel).

Sometimes my friend Scott Massey (WTSP November 2002 Employee of the Month) and I joke about "being in reruns" when we find ourselves repeating a story that we've already told. This week it's seemed like I've been in reruns, or maybe "Best Of" material. Christine's card, Brandi from Evansville calling, and then running into Pauline at the pizza shop last night. What's next, an e-mail from Jennifer Lane?

I had a good time last night with Vicky over in St. Petersburg. Dan Marino's is a fun time; so is Wet Willie's on a normal night. But with it very cold by Tampa standards, and at an outdoor venue, what did we have? Frozen drinks. Heh, funny how that works out. Hitting the St. Pete Cafe was an interesting first... not quite Dwight's (but then again, no other place on earth is quite like Dwight's), but a relaxed (and not freezing cold) place to talk and what not.

WSMV in Nashville called the other day. Which I found funny, since I was actually IN Nashville the day before they called. They don't have any non-morning openings at this point though as it is, so I suppose the point is moot.

It just occurred to me that New Year's Eve is on Tuesday night. My, how time flies. 2002 has been an interesting year... some ups and downs, some wild times and difficult challenges. 2003 has the potential for greatness. Think of "A Long December" by the Counting Crows... There's reason to believe maybe this year will be better than the last. I can deal with that.

If Green Bay beats the New York Jets today, you can punch the Packers' ticket to the Super Bowl. You realize that the Packers have NEVER lost a home playoff game? Ever!! A win today lets them slip past the Eagles and earn the #1 seed in the NFC and home field advantage through the playoffs. Meanwhile, the Colts are in as a wild card team. I still stand to make $100 if they win the Super Bowl (though that might be asking for a bit much at this point)...
