Kilgo The Cat

Sunday
August 1, 2004

It's been a nice weekend here in Tampa. Relaxing and nice. Last night I met up with Amy Newman over at Storman's, which is a fun nightclub over in Clearwater. Saturday night isn't the club's peak night though (it's more of a Friday & Sunday place, if you can believe that), but it was still pretty full.

I also gave the Big Brother 5 online 24/7 deal a try (they offered a three day free trial). It was interesting, but not worth the money to me. Moreover, it also had some feed cutout problems and several instances where CBS threw up a shot of the fishtank in lieu of showing what was going on. If I'm going to pay for that stuff, I want full access. That doesn't cut it in my book. FYI, if you decide to try the three day free trial, you have to call a well-hidden phone number to cancel (1-866-230-4586)... and then wait on hold. I waited nearly 20 minutes this afternoon to get a rep on the phone to pull the plug.

A number of baseball trades went down in the past couple of days, as the trade deadline hit yesterday. Nomar Garciaparra going to the Cubs was the biggest move (as part of a four team trade); what I don't understand is what the motivation was for the Twins to part with 1B Doug Mientkiewicz as part of the deal. All Minnesota received in return was minor league pitcher Justin Jones from the Cubs. Granted, Jones was ranked as the "#12 Prospect" in the Cubs organization as of May 28, 2003 according to CubsTalk.com, but Minnesota needed a starting pitcher... not a prospect. I don't get it.

(Yes, I know, with baseball you have to follow the money. But still, I don't like the trade...)

There are some pictures I've been meaning to put on here in the past couple of weeks. They're not particularly related, so I'll give them all to you here (as opposed to a section of the pictures part of this website).

Lou Pickney & Tom Bean

This is from the "Dunk The Supervisors" day at work (on 7/2/2004). Stacey Luckey actually took this pic; I didn't have the foresight to bring my own camera, and I tried to take a pic with my camera phone (which ended up looking blurry and rather unusable). I don't wear NFL jerseys to work every day, but Friday is "casual day" so I was dressed to match. Poor Tom was the last to go (since he had been out of town earlier in the day), and he was about to climb in for a series of splashes in the dunk booth. I didn't take part in the supervisor dunking process as anything more than a spectator.

Kilgo The Cat (with Lou)

I can normally be a hardass when it comes to not being swayed by my emotions. But in the case of Kilgo the cat, I came damn near close to reversing my stance of "no pets until I own my own home." This tiny kitten showed up a few weekends ago and, unlike most other cats, she seemed to jump out of her shell to come up and say hello. She was very small and couldn't have been more than just a couple of weeks old. She was meowing like crazy when I first saw her in the downstairs portion of my apartment complex, and I felt VERY bad about not taking her up to my apartment. Later on that evening, Scott Massey came by... and the cat was still there. Scott said the kitten had reacted to him the same way. We went downstairs and there she was, hiding out in the garage, but unlike most stray cats she came up to us like she was a dog or something. I named her Kilgo and gave her a piece of bread, thinking she was hungry. I know, tuna fish would've made more sense, but I was almost totally out (and I eat that stuff all the time). Kilgo didn't seem particularly interested in the bread, but then one of my neighbors came out onto his balcony and told me how he had fed her a half can of tuna earlier. So apparently she just wanted a little attention or something, as opposed to food. My apartment has a strict policy about pets, requiring a large deposit and fee for having even a cat, and I ultimately decided not to bring Kilgo up. Later on that night I went back downstairs, still wavering, but Kilgo was gone. I don't know what happened to her, but I hope she found a good home.

Crazy Latrell Sprewell image

This final picture is from a pause screen of NBA Live 2003 for the PlayStation 2. Scott and I were playing one of our usual battles in it and, as I recall, he was looking at a replay and this most unusual angle of Latrell Sprewell came up on the screen. We laughed like hell, and I decided to snap a picture of it to share, since trying to describe it would be, well... most difficult, wouldn't you say?
