Strike Aversion

Friday
August 30, 2002

"Said, woman, take it slow
It'll work itself out fine
All we need is just a little patience
Said, sugar, make it slow
And we come together fine
All we need is just a little patience..."
-Guns 'N Roses "Patience"

Woke up today to find out that Major League Baseball managed to avoid a strike. Good for them. They would've seriously pissed off a whole lot of people if they'd tried it. Hopefully the new deal will help reshape the competitive balance a bit. Hopefully.

Right now I have the Buccaneers/Texans preseason NFL game on in the front room. I would've had Phil Hendrie on 970 WFLA if the strike had happened, but since it didn't the Devil Rays are pre-empting him. It's silly, since Clear Channel owns a sports talk station in town as well, but that's the way contracts work sometimes.

I feel tired, as I didn't get a whole lot of sleep. Stayed up till past noon working hard on my researcher tryout for 10 News. If someone else beats me out for the spot, then hats off to them, cause I gave it my best effort. It was an interesting combination of skills tested: my internet research skills, my ability to dissemenate important information quickly, and my ability to write in a clear and concise manner. All under time restrictions. I was actually quite amazed with the volume of information out there on the topics assigned to me.

After maybe four hours of sleep, I woke up coughing. I can't ever remember doing that, not even with a bad cold or illness. Whatever the case, after hacking like a two-pack-a-day Marlboro unfiltered smoker, I got up and had some juice and felt somewhat better. The coughing went away, at least. But then sleep didn't come back easily. Tough one.

James Maynor called me up last night wanting to see if I felt like going to the Anger Management Tour show at the Ice Palace on Saturday night. He might have an extra ticket for me, but even if not then I can just buy one and meet him and his crew down on the floor. Eminem and Papa Roach in concert -- should be entertaining. Plus Carli has some gig for 97X near the arena, so I could stop by and see her, too. So we'll see what happens. Wish the trolley was up and running -- paying $10 to park is no fun.

I need to dub Scott Massey's Mr. Show tape sometime this weekend. I've had it for awhile now. In a related note, I need to buy the Season 1 & 2 DVD's...

If nothing else, at least the aversion of a strike helps the Minnesota Twins fans from getting screwed a la the Montreal Expos in 1994. The Twins can go from near-contraction to potentially World Series champs...
