Second-hand Comments From An NFL Draft Pick

Monday
April 22, 2002

The 2002 NFL draft is now in the history books. As I outlined on the main page, some of my steals of the draft's first round include Tennessee DT Albert Haynesworth (Rd. 1, Pick 15 to the Titans) and Miami CB Phillip Buchanon (Rd. 1, Pick 17 to the Raiders). New England's move to trade up and land Colorado TE Daniel Graham at Pick 21 may or may not prove long-term to be a smart move.

Scott Massey and I have been debating the value of drafting a tight end in the first round. He thinks it's not a good idea, whereas I'd say with the right player and the right circumstances, they can be quite valuable. Adding a Tony Gonzalez or a Shannon Sharpe to your team can make all the difference in the world. Look at what Keith Jackson did for the Philadelphia Eagles as a first round TE who defined that position in the early 90's.

At work this morning, Neal Boling told me about his conversation on Sunday with former Florida Gators kicker Jeff Chandler, who he once worked with at UF's television station. They discussed the shocking development of Chandler (Round 4, Pick 4 by the 49ers) being drafted before DE Alex Brown (Round 4, Pick 6 by the Bears), his teammate at Florida. Chandler said Brown was pretty down after falling into the second day of the draft. I can understand why -- once upon a time Brown was regarded by some as a probably first round draft pick. Falling to the fourth round cost Brown a great deal of money. While sympathetic to his teammate's plight, Chandler was excited to go to San Francisco in the early fourth round. Not bad for a former walk-on kicker. I wish him the best.

I went to sleep around 10 this morning... only to wake up at 11:15 in excruciating pain. I felt like my brain was about to explode, with the sinus on the left side of my head throbbing. Not good. Ended up taking some NyQuil and some ibuprofin, which somehow managed to numb the pain enough to help me get back to sleep. Right now I'm feeling okay (if not a bit groggy), but I'm knocking on wood hoping that the pain stays away. Headaches and the like are nothing to mess with, I assure you.

Perhaps my Sunday commentary pissed off someone at Capital One... because I had a telemarketer calling me this morning trying to sign me up for a Capital One credit card. Of course I pulled my usual trick -- putting my hand over the listen part of the phone (so they can't interrupt) and saying "I'm not interested -- please take me off your calling list" before hanging up. When you do that, they're supposed to actually take you off the list. And usually they do.

Speaking of telemarketers, I currently have a very short answering machine message that really messes with some of them. When I bought my new answering machine, I put a quick message on there just so I'd have something. But with many telemarketers calling via computer, there's a delay so they don't get to hear "Hi you've reached Lou, leave a message"... and you hear them saying "Hello? Hello?" It's high comedy. Well not really, but it's nice to turn the tables on those pricks who call trying to sell me stuff. So for now, the short message stays.

Well, there's playoff hockey going on that needs to be watched. I leave you now with some songs I think are worth your time to check out...

Evan Olson "Right Or Wrong"
Chicane "No Ordinary Morning"
Mr. Cheeks "Lights, Camera, Action" (a song I heard originally down at Mississippi State, but which I will forever connect with this past Friday night)
