Fun With Texting

Wednesday
February 20, 2013

I really like my phone, the Droid 4. The slide-out keyboard is outstanding, and while touchscreen technology has improved tremendously in recent years, the keyboard for me is a must. It's part of why I've avoided the iPhone to this point, though Apple being so closed source with everything drives me bonkers. I did enjoy using Stacy's iPad 2 through May of last year, though not so much that I've bought one for myself yet. I do miss playing Ticket to Ride while working out on the Precor machine, though -- it made the time go by pretty quickly.

But, while my Droid 4 is a great phone, it does have its own quirks. I've learned that it's not advisable to try doing anything with it while it's charging. Programs will open on their own accord, numbers dialed, music played, and even texts sent. I really learned my lesson early last month with the text exchange below with a certain girl I know.

4:29 p.m. Her: Serious question

(I saw this while my phone was charging. I didn't feel like answering right away, so instead I laid down to take a nap. That's right, I played the nap card. But then, while I slept, the Droid 4 decided it would be a good time to start responding on my behalf.)

6:07 p.m. Her: Did ya get my text earlier?

7:06 p.m. Droid 4: la

7:07 p.m. Her: ? La

7:13 p.m. Droid 4: Ka

7:14 p.m. Her: ?ka

7:16 p.m. Droid 4: ] :];® }~?

7:18 p.m. Her: WTF??

7:19 p.m. Droid 4: 01

7:20 p.m. Her: i give up

8:21 p.m. Her: Guess I'm not getting an answer, huh?

Of course I smoothed things over later since I'm good like that, but in hindsight the gibberish from my phone was a pretty bizarre, if not amusing, diversion.

I've learned that the key thing to do is to make sure I've put my Droid 4 into locked mode while it's charging. I've found that if my phone is in "needs to be swiped on" mode while charging it keeps the gremlins away. Check a text while it's charging and then not lock it up? It might decide to start texting on my behalf again.

My neck has been bothering me since Sunday. I don't want to be tethered to a pillow anytime I'm going on the road, but between Christmas morning with my neck going spasm-crazy after sleeping on a soft pillow and the past three days of pain, I might not have a viable alternative. Hopefully my visit to the chiropractor today helped with that. It would be nice to get more than five hours of sleep today before I start turning into Ed Norton's character in Fight Club.
