"And the price of a memory is the memory of the sorrow it brings"
Counting Crows "Mrs. Potter's Lullaby"

It was great being back in Nashville last week for Christmas. It's about a six hour drive to get to Nashville from Huntington, so it's in my best interest to maximize my travel time on visits back to my hometown. And, really, it doesn't matter where I live -- Nashville will always be home to me.

What I write often gets me in trouble, so in many ways the Twitter era has benefited me, since with brevity there is a lower likelihood of me going off at length on something that might prove problematic on down the line. Though, to be sure, even on Twitter the internet is written in pen, not pencil.

At the same time, I love to write on here, and while I haven't been nearly as active writing on here in recent years compared with, say, my five year run in Tampa, there's no reason I can't, or shouldn't, pick up the pace. I just have to be smart about how I do it.

Gwyn at work asked me if I had any New Year's resolutions. Of course, my initial thought was no -- if I need to change something, I just change it, not wait until an arbitrary date on the calendar to take action. But later I reflected further on it, and my resolution is this: to write something on here at least once a week. That might not sound like much, and really it's not, but because my perception of time moving grows quicker and quicker everyday, I can blink and realize that, poof, three weeks have passed.

Things here in Huntington are great. I love my job, my apartment is nice, the cost of living here is remarkably pleasant, and overall things are going well. I'm doing much better than I was this time last year, and yes I mean even before the end of the Stacy era, something that I wasn't able to truly realize until I saw it first-hand back in Nashville. Sometimes you need a little time and distance to gain proper perspective on things.

I still really miss Stacy's dog, Clyde, and it was nice to see him on a supervised visit last Saturday morning. The hero's welcome he gave me was great. I'm numb to everything else, but not getting to be around him anymore still really stings me. He's a good dog.

A really amusing situation developed this week when a girl I had been dating abruptly posted on Facebook that she was engaged. A few weeks back I posted a reference on Twitter to the text I sent my buddy Scott about her and another girl I've been dating where I compared them to the memorable Goofus and Gallant cartoon series from Highlights magazine:

In some ways it's like Goofus and Gallant. "[Girl A] hits you up for cash to pay her cell phone bill" vs. "[Girl B] insists on paying for breakfast the next morning."

I couldn't keep something that brilliant to myself, so I referenced it on Twitter. Putting my personal life on blast isn't something I normally like to do, but I couldn't help myself on this one. The volume of responses was surprisingly high, with some questioning why I would post that and risk her reading it. But, considering that almost everyone who I had told about her to any level of depth had suggested that I kick her to the curb, and more importantly because I didn't care if she read it, it was fine by me if she did. In many ways, by getting engaged, Goofus did me a favor. I have better options.

This weekend's NFL Wild Card weekend schedule is loaded with great matchups. I work with some Bengals fans who are so jaded that they aren't letting their guard down one bit despite Cincy facing a strugggggling Texans team. Vikings/Packers is a divisional and geographical rivalry, plus night playoff games in Green Bay are fantastic to watch on television. Colts/Ravens is #CHUCKSTRONG vs. Ray Lewis' retirement, plus there are still plenty of people in Baltimore bitter about the Colts leaving in the dark of night for Indianapolis with the threat of eminent domain hanging over the team in 1984. And finally there's Seahawks/Redskins, two red-hot teams (a combined 13-1 since Week 10) with dueling marquee rookie QBs in Russell Wilson (Seattle) and Robert Griffin III (Washington). Enjoy it -- I definitely will.
